Inspiring Women, Inspiring Girls. Celebrating National Women’s Month
BY DEBBIE NAZARIAN, LEMONADE DAY NATIONAL DIRECTOR
Today, girls around the world aspire to be astronauts and CEOs and scientists and even President of the United States. The possibilities are endless for every child to achieve their goals. At Lemonade Day, we continue to nurture those dreams and be part of helping make them a reality for our participants.
It is near the end of National Women’s Month. In today’s blog, I want to celebrate the women who inspire us to dream bigger, accept failure, to try again, and to be confident. There are plenty of role models in front of us. That list includes our moms and aunts and sisters, teachers, Sunday school instructors, coaches, physicians, bosses, community leaders and elected officials, CEOs and other leaders of companies, and the list goes on. The women in these roles help mold us, our characters, our confidence, and our ambitions. They are around to pick us up when we fall and encourage us to try again or try something else. Their words, their quotes, and their own failures encourage us to never give up. We can benefit through the words of so many strong and inspirational female leaders.
“If you are successful it is because somewhere, sometime, someone gave you a life or an idea that started you in the right direction. Remember, also, that you are indebted to life until you help some less fortunate person, just as you were helped.” – Melinda Gates, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-founder, from her high school commencement speech
“The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you’re very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind, and above all be humble.” – Serena Williams, professional tennis player who has won more singles titles than any man or woman
“Don’t ever make decisions based on fear. Make decisions based on hope and possibility. Make decisions based on what should happen, not what shouldn’t.” – Michelle Obama, former U.S. First Lady
“If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou, Pulitzer-prize nominated poet
“The most difficult thing is the decision to act. The rest is merely tenacity.” – Amelia Earhart, first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean
“We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.” - Malala Yousafzai, I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban
“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless” - Mother Teresa
March 21st was Absolutely Incredible Kid Day. Some of our very own incredible Lemonade Day female entrepreneurs share their inspirations:
“I owe my success to the people who believed in me and gave me the opportunity.” – Danyarelie Ruiz, Lemonade Day National Youth Entrepreneur of the Year 2020
“I am an Indian American, so the fact that an African Indian American is our vice president is a huge thing! Kamala Harris inspires me to be fearless and to dream big. Her presence in the White House as the second in command is encouraging and inspiring to girls all around the world to be whatever they want to be without fear.” – Saanvi Vinod, Lemonade Day National Youth Entrepreneur of the Year 2019
“Don’t be discouraged by life’s little stings, get back up and spread your wings!” – Mikaila Ulmer, Lemonade Day youth entrepreneur and CEO of Me & The Bees Lemonade.
Visit the National Women Hall of Fame to read more about the women, past and present, that have stepped out of the shadows to make a difference.
Every person, boy or girl or male or female, can find inspiration in role models of any gender. I didn’t want National Women’s Month to come and go without recognizing the women in our lives who made a difference for us.
